Description of Wolfram Tungsten Electrode
Wolfram Tungsten Electrodes are made from high-purity tungsten powder. After cold isostatic pressing into a billet, they are solid-phase sintered in a hydrogen-protected sintering furnace at 2200–2400°C, achieving a density ≥18.3 g/cm³. Grain refinement is achieved through multiple rotary forging and annealing processes, resulting in seamless tungsten rods with diameters of 0.5–10 mm and lengths of 50–250 mm. During machining, the outer diameter is first maintained within a ±0.01 mm tolerance using a centerless grinder. Diamond grinding is then used to create sharp, flat, or ball-end tips to customer specifications, with a tip roughness Ra ≤ 0.4 μm. The surface can retain its original metallic color, be electrochemically polished to a bright silver sheen, or be black anodized to create a matte anti-glare coating. The batch color variation, ΔE, is ≤ 1.0. Each electrode undergoes eddy current testing before shipment to ensure the absence of cracks and slag inclusions. Randomly sampled electrodes undergo three cycles of rapid cooling and heating at 1000°C. Only those without cracks are released.
Features of Wolfram Tungsten Electrode
1. Extremely High Melting Point: Tungsten has the highest melting point of all metallic elements (3422°C). This means that under the high temperatures of the welding arc (typically 3000-7000°C), the tungsten electrode remains solid without melting, with only the tip reaching a white-hot state.
2. High Electron Emission: Tungsten is a good electron emitter, especially when doped with certain rare earth oxides (such as thorium, cerium, and lanthanum). This reduces its electron work function, making arc ignition easier and the arc more stable.
3. High Density and Strength: Tungsten's high density (19.3 g/cm³) makes it a strong and durable electrode. Even at high temperatures, it maintains high strength and resists deformation.
4. Corrosion Resistance: Tungsten exhibits excellent resistance to most acids, bases, and molten metals.
Applications of Wolfram Tungsten Electrode
Aerospace: Joining turbine blades, combustion chambers, and cryogenic rocket ducts for maximum strength and reliability under extreme conditions.
Chemical and Power: Seamless connections on cryogenic LNG pipelines, high-pressure reactors, and containment vessels in fusion and fission facilities.
Food and Bio: Passivation and orbital TIG on sanitary stainless lines, aseptic silos, and smart blender tubes, meeting USDA and FDA protocols for sterility.
Vehicle and Motorsports: Lightweight TIG on high-temp titanium exit ducts, modular rear subframes, and crash-tested aluminum gussets, crafted for speed and endurance on the track.

Precautions for using Wolfram Tungsten Electrode
1. Wear powder-free gloves when handling to avoid contamination from oil and sweat, which can prevent porosity during subsequent welding.
2. Tungsten is hard and brittle. Avoid striking, dropping, or bending it under force. Use copper or aluminum soft jaws for gripping, with a torque of ≤0.3 N·m.
3. Dry in a dryer at 80°C for 30 minutes before first use to remove adsorbed moisture. If not in use for an extended period, return the electrode to its sealed bag containing silica gel and maintain a relative humidity of <40%.
4. During welding, the current should be increased and decreased gradually. Avoid sudden high current surges to prevent thermal stress cracking. After stopping, allow the electrode to cool to room temperature before moving the equipment.
5. Wear a dust mask and goggles during sharpening. Use a dedicated tungsten electrode sharpening machine with a speed of ≤3000 rpm. Use air cooling; do not use water to prevent oxidation.
6. Thorium-containing tungsten electrodes are trace radioactive. Grinding dust must be collected and disposed of as radioactive solid waste. Other rare earth tungsten electrodes can be treated as general industrial solid waste.
