Tungsten boats are mainly used for evaporation or metalization of Al, Ni, Cu, Ag and many other metals in vaccuum furnaces.
Precautions for using tungsten boat
After recrystallization due to high temperature exposure, tungsten boats become exceedingly brittle, leading to easy fracture upon impact or vibrational stress. For products incorporating electric light sources where reliability is critical, the usual practice to lessen cracking of the filament is adding 3-5% rhenium into the doped tungsten boat, called tungsten-rhenium wire. This modification adds effectiveness in increasing the temperature at which the tungsten becomes brittle to room temperature, or even below, which is a hallmark effect of rhenium. No other element has proven so far to have the ability to exhibit this effect in tungsten.
W10 has a high resistance to both acids and alkalis at room temperature, but can oxidize in damp air. Because of this, care should be taken to ensure fine tungsten boats aren't left stored in a damp atmosphere for prolonged periods of time. Furthermore, W10 starts to bond with carbon around 1200 degrees Celcius, forming tungsten carbide. This is important to keep in mind when performing hydrogen burning treatments on the filaments because the tungsten may interact with graphite lubricants located on the exterior surface which would cause the filament to be inflexible and cracked.
