Description of TZM ASTM B386 Molybdenum Alloy Plate

Molybdenum's prime alloy is TZM. This alloy contains 99.2% min. to 99.5% max. of Mo, 0.50% Ti, and 0.08% Zr with a trace of carbide formations. TZM offers twice the strength of pure moly at temperatures over 1300 °C. The recrystallization temperature of TZM is approximately 250 °C higher than moly, and it offers better weldability.

TZM costs approximately 25% more than pure molybdenum and costs only about 5-10% more to machine. For high-strength applications such as rocket nozzles, furnace structural components, and forging dies, it can be well worth the cost differential.

Application: The TZM Sheet or TZM Plate is used as the high-temperature furnace components, Plastic Injection Molding Nozzles, Casting Molds, Rotating Anodes and etc.

TZM is available in sheet and rod form in basically the same size range as moly, with the exception of thin foil. We are experienced in the fabrication of TZM. Refer to the separate TZM sheet.

Features of TZM ASTM B386 Molybdenum Alloy Plate

Excellent High-Temperature Performance:
TZM alloy has a high melting point (2623°C) and low vapor pressure, allowing it to maintain strong mechanical properties at high temperatures. Its recrystallization temperature is higher than pure molybdenum, enabling it to withstand temperatures up to 1400°C.

High Strength and Creep Resistance:
Through solid-solution strengthening and carbide hardening, TZM alloy is much stronger and more creep-resistant than pure molybdenum. At room temperature, its tensile strength reaches 760 MPa, with an elongation of 15%.

Low Thermal Expansion:
The alloy has a low thermal expansion coefficient (5.2×10⁻⁶/°C), ensuring good dimensional stability in high-temperature environments.

Good Workability:
TZM alloy can be easily processed using common methods like forging and rolling.

Strong Corrosion Resistance:
It performs well in high-temperature and vacuum conditions, especially in liquid metal and glass-melting applications.

Applications of TZM ASTM B386 Molybdenum Alloy Plate

Aerospace Industry:
TZM alloy is used to make high-temperature parts like jet engine nozzles and combustion chamber components because it can handle extreme heat and mechanical stress.

Electronics Industry:
It is suitable for high-temperature electronic parts, such as X-ray anode targets and electron beam evaporation sources.

Heat Treatment Equipment:
The alloy is used to make heating elements, support parts, and hot zone components for heat treatment furnaces, improving equipment lifespan.

Metal Casting & Forging:
As a mold material, TZM alloy resists thermal cracking and maintains stable dimensions.

Automotive Industry:
It is used in high-temperature engine components and other car parts.

FAQ for TZM ASTM B386 Molybdenum Alloy Plate

Are you a factory or manufacturer?

A: Yes, we are a factory, but we generally use our trading company to handle the business abroad. It will be more convenient to receive the remittance and arrange the shipment.

What is the delivery method?

A: Generally, we send cargo by UPS, DHL, or FedEx. Also, we can send by sea to a seaport or by air to the closest airport.

Why is your product so cost-effective?

A: We cut out the middlemen in the end-to-end manufacturing process, and we obtain raw material directly from its source.

Do you do spot quality inspection or full inspection?

A: 100% full inspection for sure. All unqualified products are discarded.

How do you ensure your lead time?

A: From material preparation to machining and finally to a full inspection. Every stage of production is strictly monitored and controlled to give you an accurate delivery time.

What is the MOQ of TZM ASTM B386 Molybdenum Alloy Plate?

A: Depends on quantity, generally, no MOQ limit.

How to pay for it?

A: A bank transfer (T/T) will be acceptable.

What is the delivery time?

A: around 7-20 days, which depends on the quantity and production.

What kind of package is it?

A: Generally, we use a carton case or a plywood case with protective material inside to ensure the safety of cargo.

What is the lead time?

A: From the order placed to cargo receiving will take around 10-25 days.

What is TZM alloy?
TZM is a high-performance molybdenum alloy containing small amounts of Titanium (Ti), Zirconium (Zr), and Carbon (C). It offers better strength, creep resistance, and high-temperature stability than pure molybdenum.

What are the key properties of TZM alloy?
High melting point (2623°C / 4753°F)

Excellent strength at high temperatures (up to 1400°C / 2552°F)

Good creep resistance (resists deformation under stress)

Low thermal expansion (stable in heat)

Good machinability (can be forged, rolled, or machined)

What is ASTM B386?
ASTM B386 is the standard specification for molybdenum and molybdenum alloy plates, sheets, and strips, including TZM. It defines requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and dimensions.

Where is TZM ASTM B386 alloy plate used?
Aerospace: Jet engine parts, rocket nozzles

Electronics: X-ray targets, semiconductor components

Industrial Furnaces: Heat shields, heating elements

Metal Processing: Die-casting molds, forging tools

Automotive: High-temperature engine components

How does TZM compare to pure molybdenum?
TZM has:

Higher strength (especially at high temperatures)

Better creep resistance (less deformation under stress)

Improved recrystallization temperature (stays stable longer under heat)

Can TZM alloy be machined or welded?
Machining: Yes, but it requires carbide or diamond tools due to hardness.

Welding: Possible with specialized techniques (e.g., electron beam welding).

What sizes and thicknesses are available?
TZM plates come in various thicknesses (e.g., 1mm to 50mm) and custom sizes. Check supplier specifications.

How should TZM plates be stored and handled?
Store in a dry, clean environment to prevent oxidation.

Handle with care to avoid surface scratches.

Is TZM corrosion-resistant?
It resists corrosion in high-temperature and vacuum environments but may oxidize in air above 600°C (1112°F). Protective coatings can help.
