Customized tungsten carbide rings are made of high-purity WC-Co powder through vacuum sintering + HIP compact molding, with a hardness of HRA ≥ 91.5. The outer diameter is 8–80 mm, the inner diameter is 4–70 mm, and the thickness is 1.5–20 mm. They can be processed according to the drawings. Mirror or PVD coating is optional. Due to its high brittleness, it needs to be assembled with light pressure and protected from chlorine and moisture.

Description of Customized Tungsten Carbide Ring

 

Custom tungsten carbide rings are manufactured from virgin WC-Co alloy powder through a four-step process: spray drying, cold isostatic pressing, vacuum sintering, and hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The blanks achieve an HRA hardness of ≥91.5 and a density of 14.8–15.1 g/cm³. After sintering, the outer diameter is rough-ground using a centerless diamond grinder, the inner bore is internally ground, and both end faces are fine-ground using a 1500# diamond grinding wheel. The rings maintain an outer diameter tolerance of ±0.01 mm, an inner diameter tolerance of ±0.015 mm, and end face parallelism of ≤0.005 mm. Surface finishes include mirror polish, sandblasting, matte finish, and PVD black TiCN or TiAlN coating. Chamfers can be machined on a five-axis CNC machine to create 0.3×45° or R0.2 safety chamfers. Ring color varies depending on the process: polished to a bright metallic silver, sandblasted to a fine matte finish, and coated to a deep black or gunmetal gray. The color variation between batches is ΔE ≤ 1.0.

Common size range: outer diameter 8–80 mm, inner diameter 4–70 mm, thickness 1.5–20 mm; special specifications can be customized in 0.5 mm increments. After sintering, each ring undergoes C-Scan ultrasonic testing to ensure the absence of pores or cracks larger than 0.3 mm. The cobalt pool distribution is then inspected under a 200× metallographic microscope, with a porosity of ≤A02, B00, or C00.

Applications of Customized Tungsten Carbide Ring

 

As a stationary or rotating ring, paired with a graphite ring, ceramic ring, or another tungsten carbide ring, they form a sealing surface under high-speed rotation and high pressure, resisting wear and corrosion from the media and ensuring long-term leakage prevention. They are used as bushings, bearings, and sliding sleeves in extremely harsh, abrasive environments (such as mining mud pumps, sand pumps, and oil drilling). Their lifespan far exceeds that of steel parts. In wire and bar mills, tungsten carbide roller rings are used in finishing mill stands. Their high wear resistance ensures precise and stable product dimensions and reduces the number of roll changes.

Precautions for Using Customized Tungsten Carbide Ring

 

1. Tungsten carbide possesses excellent hardness, yet it can fail catastrophically under shock. Minimize risk by preventing any strikes, drops, or blows, especially against steel. Press-fitting with nylon or copper media is preferred for assembly.

2. Pairing tungsten carbide rings with stainless steel shafts is best done within a 20 to 40°C temperature range, applying a 0.02 to 0.05 mm interference fit. This range confines stresses and mitigates the risk of ring fracture.

3. Do not allow coated rings to reach temperatures above 500°C. Such heat will oxidize and thereby compromise the protective TiCN and TiAlN multilayers, leading to premature wear.

4. For long shelf life, place rings in a dry, ventilated room, controlling relative humidity at or below 60%. Insulate the parts from any vapors of acidic or alkaline nature to guard against environmental attack.
