Nickel-chromium-aluminum-iron alloy sputtering targets are primarily nickel-based multi-component alloy sputtering targets containing nickel, chromium, aluminum, and iron. They are used in physical vapor deposition (PVD) for the fabrication of functional thin films. Targets of this alloy possess high-temperature stability, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, and excellent sputtering performance, which are required in the aerospace, energy equipment, electronic devices, and industrial protective coatings fields.

Manufacturing Process for Nickel-Chromium-Aluminum-Iron Alloy Sputtering Targets

Preparation of raw materials: Fe, Al, Cr, and Ni of high purity (≥99.95%) are chosen and weighed according to the specified ratio designed for the alloy composition (e.g., Ni:Cr:Al:Fe = 74:20:3:3, which can be varied according to the other components). The protection of aluminum can also be used to preserve it from oxidation if applied last.

Vacuum Induction Melting: Charge materials are placed in a vacuum induction furnace and heated to a target temperature high enough to cause complete melting of the charge materials. The melt is temperature equilibrated at this temperature to aid in complete alloying. The furnace is purged with argon and then backfilled with a protective inert gas. In this melting and alloying step, the protective gas atmosphere is utilized to promote the obtainment of a homogeneously micro-structurally and compositionally alloyed melt.
Casting and Homogenization Annealing: The melt is poured into a pre-designed mold and cooled to obtain an ingot. After cooling, homogenization annealing is performed to eliminate compositional segregation and casting stress.
Hot Working and Finishing: The ingot is forged, hot-rolled, and thinned to the target thickness. Solid solution/annealing treatment is then performed, followed by machining to the final target dimensions, with a surface roughness Ra ≤ 1.6 μm.
