Description of Elkonite Copper Tungsten Erosion Wheels
CuW alloy is also called tungsten copper alloy, which is equivalent to the brand Elknoite material. Tungsten copper is an alloy of tungsten and copper. It is produced by powder mixing, pressing, and sintering, and the following processes. With two metals mixed, tungsten copper has the advantage of tungsten and also the advantage of copper, like good heat resistance, oxidation resistance, highly thermal and electrical conductivity, and is easy to machine.
Elkonite Copper Tungsten Erosion Wheels for PCD tools discs. All of our products are equivalent to grinding wheel types such as Voro2 and 13VF8-E, 11V9 25GR, 1A1, 6A2, and 11V9, made from CuW and WoCu materials. We deliver standard-size electrodes for Walter and Vollmer disc erosion machines, and we also produce custom electrodes according to customer drawings.
Manufacturing process and key technologies of Elkonite Copper Tungsten Erosion Wheels
The powder metallurgy process
Raw material preparation:
Tungsten powder (1-3μm) + copper powder (<1μm) three-dimensional powder mixing (time ≥4h, uniformity >99%).
Molding process:
Compression molding: pressure 200-400MPa, green density 60-70% (for simple shapes).
Injection molding (MIM): suitable for complex gear structure, binder (PEG/PVAC) degreasing is the key.
Infiltration sintering:
First sinter tungsten skeleton (1400℃/H₂) → copper infiltration (1100℃/vacuum), final density >98%.
Precision machining technology
Electrical discharge machining (EDM):
Processing precision gears (tolerance ±0.01mm), surface roughness Ra 0.8μm.
Laser surface treatment:
Laser remelting of the surface layer (power 500W) generates W-Cu eutectic structure, which improves wear resistance by 50%.
Features of Elkonite Copper Tungsten Erosion Wheels
High wear resistance: Adding tungsten makes the alloy wheel highly wear-resistant, so it keeps its shape even after repeated use.
Excellent conductivity: The high conductivity of copper ensures efficient current transfer, which is crucial for precise material removal in EDM (electrical discharge machining).
Good thermal conductivity: The alloy wheel effectively dissipates heat, preventing overheating during high-speed machining.
High melting point and strength at high temperatures: It can withstand high temperatures, making it suitable for machining hard materials.
Strong corrosion resistance: The material resists corrosion well, so it lasts longer in various environments.
Dimensional stability: Its low thermal expansion coefficient ensures stability even at high temperatures.

Applications of Elkonite Copper Tungsten Erosion Wheels
Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM): Mainly used for hard materials, like sharpening polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools. On high-precision grinding machines such as the Vollmer QXD 250, Vollmer 260, and Walter Helitronic Raptor, Elkonite Copper Tungsten Erosion Wheels provide excellent precision and efficiency.
Resistance Welding: Suitable for mold inserts and surface treatments in welding processes like projection welding and flash welding.
Electrical Forging and Upsetting: Ideal for high-temperature, high-pressure electrical forging and upsetting molds.
Aerospace and Semiconductor Industries: In aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing, where extreme precision and material quality are required, this alloy wheel is an essential tool.
