Description of Customized Tungsten Alloy Heavy Turning Milling
Customized Tungsten Alloy Heavy Turning Millings utilize high-density tungsten alloy bar stock or sintered blanks with a density of 17.5–18.8 g/cm³ and a hardness of HRA ≥ 91. The process consists of three stages: First, the blank undergoes a vacuum annealing at 1050°C for 3 hours to eliminate internal stresses. Subsequently, all operations are completed in a single clamping on a five-axis turning and milling center: turning the external diameter to a tolerance of ±0.005 mm, milling keyways, flanges, and spiral grooves, and drilling, boring, and tapping are performed simultaneously, eliminating datum errors caused by multiple clampings. Finally, diamond tools are used to achieve a mirror finish with a surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.2 µm. Electropolishing is performed as needed to achieve a surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.1 µm. High-pressure emulsion cooling is used throughout the entire process, with a flow rate of ≥ 15 L/min, to prevent high-temperature oxidation of the tungsten alloy and tool chipping.
Common dimensions range: OD 20–300 mm, length 50–500 mm, wall thickness 2–30 mm. Customized designs include stepped shafts, deep holes, internal threads, special-shaped grooves, and polyhedron structures. Ten percent of each batch undergoes a 550°C × 100 h creep test, with elongation ≤ 0.1%. The product also passes a 48-h salt spray test, showing no corrosion.
Features of Customized Tungsten Alloy Heavy Turning Milling
Compactness Combined with Lightweight: Tailored tungsten alloy components reach top mass while held to a constrained envelope, establishing the key premise of every use case.
Exceptional Toughness and Abrasion Resistance: End-of-process parts hold up to extreme pressure and friction, delivering enduring durability.
Thermal and Radiative Attenuation: With elevated tungsten fractions, the alloy excels at obstructing incident gamma and X-ray photons.
Design Agility with Mass: Despite inherent machining toughness, a hybrid milling-turn platform realizes geometrically intricate and dense shapes that traditional mono-process lathes and mills struggle to deliver. Gravity-defying voids, fluid curves, and sculpted apertures cluster into single monolithic segments.
Applications of Customized Tungsten Alloy Heavy Turning Milling
Gyroscope rotors: Within the most advanced inertial navigation architectures, the rotors are the gravitational core. They demand a matchless blend of inertial density and dynamic balancing, allowing the angular momentum vector to be hammered into a steady-state orientation. The tolerances are such that any deviation, however minuscule, would propagate into navigational drift, undermining the very premise of high-precision vector estimation.
Aircraft counterweights/balance blocks: This is a classic application. Aircraft, helicopters, missiles, and satellites require high-density counterweights to adjust the center of gravity and balance to ensure flight stability. Tungsten alloy can provide maximum counterweight in a very small space, making it an ideal material for "ballast."
