Characteristics and Applications of TZM Alloy

TZM alloy has the characteristics of high melting point, high strength, high elastic modulus, small linear expansion coefficient, low vapor pressure, good electrical and thermal conductivity, strong corrosion resistance and good high-temperature mechanical properties, so it is widely used in many fields.

The common preparation methods of TZM alloy (molybdenum zirconium titanium alloy) are: the arc melting-casting method and powder metallurgy technology.

The arc melting-casting method is to melt pure molybdenum with an arc, add a certain amount of Ti, Zr and other alloy elements according to the weight percentage, and then use the conventional casting method to obtain TZM alloy (molybdenum zirconium titanium alloy);

Powder metallurgy has a unique chemical composition and mechanical and physical properties, which cannot be obtained by traditional melting and casting methods. It uses high-purity molybdenum powder and TiH2 powder, ZrH2 powder and graphite powder to mix evenly in proportion and then form by cold isostatic pressing, and then sintered at high temperature under a protective atmosphere to obtain TZM billet. The billet is then subjected to high-temperature hot rolling (high-temperature forging), high-temperature annealing, medium-temperature hot rolling (medium-temperature forging), medium-temperature annealing to eliminate stress, and then warm rolling (warm forging) to obtain TZM finished material. The rolling (forging) process of the billet and the subsequent heat treatment have a great influence on the performance, anisotropy and texture of the material.

The use of powder metallurgy can save large equipment such as vacuum consumable arc furnaces, large extruders and forging hammers, and corresponding high-temperature heating furnaces, simplifying the process, shortening the production cycle, reducing energy consumption, and doubling the production capacity and yield rate, so that the cost is greatly reduced.

TZM alloy (molybdenum zirconium titanium alloy) is usually prepared into bars and plates. Its good mechanical properties under high temperature and high pressure make it widely used in the military industry, such as the valve body, rocket nozzle, gas pipeline, and nozzle throat lining in torpedo engines; and the main shaft of the platinum-rhodium coated stirrer for the glass melting furnace on the color picture tube glass shell production line is used to utilize its corrosion resistance to metal liquid;

TZM alloy (molybdenum-zirconium-titanium alloy) has a high melting point, so it can be used as a die-casting mold material for black or non-ferrous metals and a seamless stainless steel perforated head, such as the mold of the copper rotor on the engine;

TZM alloy is also widely used in the electronic and electrical industry, such as electron tube cathodes, grids, high-voltage rectifier components, semiconductor thin film integrated circuits, etc.; in addition, TZM alloy is also widely used in nuclear energy equipment, such as radiation shields, support frames, heat exchangers, rails, etc.
