Description of Beryllium Wafer
Beryllium wafers are discs of high-purity beryllium. Like most beryllium, they are silvery-white and shiny. For beryllium wafers, we employ a vacuum-melted beryllium ingot, which undergoes multi-directional forging to enhance the ingot's pores and impurities. This is followed by hot rolling into thin sheets, which are later cut to the desired dimensions using either a lathe or laser. The thickness and diameter of the wafers range from 0.1 mm to 2 mm and 25 mm to 300 mm, respectively. Typical tolerances of the beryllium wafers are ±0.02 mm. Greater precision is also offered, if necessary.
Each Beryllium wafer is individually processed through a 2-hour anneal in a vacuum furnace set to 650°C, which removes processing stress. Following, beryllium wafers are ultrasonically cleaned in pure water and dried with a lint-free cloth. The resultant surface is mirror-like, and the roughness (Ra) is no more than 0.05 μm. The beryllium wafers are stored individually in anti-static bags that are sealed in a vacuum. The sealed bags are then cushioned with foam to secure the wafers from shocks during transport.
