Description of ASTM B196 Beryllium Copper Alloy Round Rod
ASTM B196 beryllium copper alloy round bar is a precipitation-strengthened material with a copper matrix and approximately 1.8–2.0% beryllium content. It corresponds to UNS number C17200 and is commonly referred to commercially as Alloy 25. This material is melted, hot-worked, and finally heat-treated according to ASTM B196/B196M-2018. Delivery conditions include solution annealed (A), solution-finished and cold-worked (1/2H, H), and solution-aged hardened (AT). Sizes typically range from 3–300 mm in diameter, with lengths up to 4 m available, and can be cut to length upon request.
The chemical composition is strictly controlled within the specification: Be 1.8–2.0%, Ni+Co ≥ 0.2%, Ni+Co+Fe ≤ 0.6%, Al ≤ 0.2%, Si ≤ 0.2%, with the balance being high-purity copper. All batches are accompanied by an EN 10204/3.1 material certificate, including the vacuum melting furnace number, heat treatment curve, and mechanical and electrical test data. The microstructure after aging is composed of a supersaturated α phase and uniformly dispersed γ′ precipitates, with a grain size controlled within 10 μm. The surface is centerlessly ground to a roughness of Ra ≤ 0.4 μm, a straightness of 0.5 mm/m, and a roundness tolerance within ±0.025 mm of the nominal diameter.
This round bar can be formed using conventional machining (turning, milling, drilling, grinding, CNC), as well as EDM and laser cutting. It is also suitable for inert gas welding, resistance welding, and brazing. It can also be plated (Au, Ag, Ni, Sn), PVD, and passivated. To avoid the risk of stress corrosion, a low-temperature stress relief annealing at 315°C for 2 hours is recommended for all machined parts before final finishing.

Strength and Elasticity: Peak-aged C17200 (Alloy 25) rounds bars demonstrate an ultimate tensile strength of 1,200–1,400 MPa, yielding more than 1,000 MPa of yield strength and possessing an elastic modulus of 128 GPa, which is comparable to many alloy steels. Its density is only 8.36 g/cm³.
Hardness and Wear Resistance: Peak hardness of this alloy reaches 38–45 HRC. Its low friction coefficient results in maintaining long-term dimensions in the presence of heavy loads or fretting wear.
Electrical and Thermal Conductivity: The electrical conductivity of copper alloys with high strength is placed at 22–28 %IACS. In addition, these alloys also possess a thermal conductivity of around 105–120 W/(m·K). This means these alloys can carry a large amount of electrical current while simultaneously dissipating heat.
Corrosion Resistance and Non-Magnetic Properties: This alloy also resists corrosion in air, seawater, sulfide, and chloride liquids while approaching pure copper in performance. In addition, alloys of this copper do not spark on impact and have a very low permeability of less than 1.001, making them completely non-magnetic.
Applications of ASTM B196 Beryllium Copper Alloy Round Rod
