Products Description
Tungsten carbide (TC or WC) blades are high-hardness cutting tools made from tungsten carbide powder and cobalt (Co) and other metals through powder metallurgy. Due to its wear resistance, high hardness and excellent thermal stability, tungsten carbide blades are widely used in mechanical processing, mining and precision manufacturing.
Type of Tungsten carbide insert blades
| ISO Standard | Composition Features | Applicable Materials | Representative Grades |
|---|---|---|---|
| P Grade | WC-TiC-Co (with added TiC) | Steel (medium/high carbon steel) | YT15, P10-P40 |
| M Grade | WC-TiC-TaC-Co | Stainless steel, heat-resistant alloys | YW2, M10-M40 |
| K Grade | WC-Co (pure tungsten carbide) | Cast iron, non-ferrous metals | YG6, K10-K30 |
| N Grade | Ultrafine-grained WC (grain size < 0.5μm) | High-hardness materials (quenched steel) | YS8, H10-H30 |
Features of Tungsten carbide insert blades
| Features | Parameter/Performance | Industrial Value |
| Ultra-high Hardness | HRA 90~94 (equivalent to HV 1400~2000) | Second only to diamond, can cut hard-to-machine materials such as quenched steel (HRC60), titanium alloys, etc. |
| Excellent Wear Resistance | Wear rate is only 10%~20% of high-speed steel (HSS) | Extends tool life, reduces the frequency of tool changes on the production line. |
| High-temperature Red Hardness | Retains hardness >80% at 800°C | Suitable for high-speed dry cutting (e.g., processing of aluminum alloys). |
| Strength | 4000~6000 MPa | Withstands intermittent cutting impacts (e.g., rough machining of castings). |
| Chemical Stability | Resistant to acid and alkali corrosion (except aqua regia, hydrofluoric acid) | Suitable for cutting fluid environments, avoids oxidation failure. |
Applications of Tungsten carbide insert blades
Metal cutting:
Turning inserts, milling inserts, drill bits.
Example: Inconel 718 is processed with PVD-TiAlN coated inserts, with a cutting speed of up to 120m/min.
Mining tools:
Rock drill teeth, shield machine hobs (WC-8%Co, impact-resistant design).
Non-metal processing:
Cutting of glass/carbon fiber composites (ultra-fine grain WC, to prevent delamination).

FAQ for Tungsten carbide insert blades
What are the main components of tungsten carbide blades?
Answer: It is mainly composed of tungsten carbide (WC) particles and cobalt (Co) binder phase, and the cobalt content is usually 3%-20% (wt%). Some grades will add carbides such as TiC and TaC to improve specific performance.
What are the advantages of tungsten carbide blades over high-speed steel (HSS)?
✅ Higher hardness: HRA 90-94 (HSS is only HRC 65-70)
✅ Better wear resistance: The service life can reach 5-10 times that of HSS
✅ High temperature resistance: It can work at 800-1000°C (HSS fails at about 600°C)
✅ Higher processing efficiency: 3-5 times the cutting speed is allowed
