High Density Tungsten Heavy Alloy Plate

High-Density Tungsten Heavy Alloy Plate is a high-density alloy plate primarily composed of tungsten, with the addition of alloying elements such as nickel and iron. Its main component is tungsten, typically accounting for 85%-99% of the composition, and it is produced through powder metallurgy processes. This alloy plate exhibits high density, high strength, excellent mechanical properties, and good machinability.

Description of High Density Tungsten Heavy Alloy Plate

Tungsten heavy alloy is major with Tungsten content of 85%-97% and includes Ni, Fe, Cu, Co, Mo, and Cr materials. The density is between 16.8-18.8 g/cm³. Our products are mainly divided into two series: W-Ni-Fe, W-Ni-Co (magnetic), and W-Ni-Cu (non-magnetic). We produce various big-sized Tungsten heavy alloy parts by CIP, various small parts by mold pressing, extruding, or MIN, various high-strength plates, bars, and shafts by forging, rolling, or hot extruding. According to the customers' drawing, we can also produce various shapes, design technology processes, develop various products, and later machine.

16.5-19.0 g/cm3 density of tungsten heavy alloys (tungsten nickel copper and tungsten nickel iron) are the most important industrial property. The density of tungsten is two times higher than steel and 1.5 times higher than lead. Although many other metals such as gold, platinum, and tantalum, have a comparable density to heavy tungsten alloy, they are either over expensive to obtain or exotic to the environment. Combined with the high machinability and high module elasticity, the density property makes the tungsten heavy alloy to be capable of being machined into a variety of density components needed in many industrial fields. Given an example of a counterweight. In a very limited space, a counterweight made of tungsten nickel, copper, and tungsten nickel iron is the most preferred material to offset the gravity change caused by off-balance, vibration, and swinging.

Features of High Density Tungsten Heavy Alloy Plate

High Density: With a density of 17.0–19.3 g/cm³, it far exceeds that of ordinary steel and lead, providing greater mass in the same volume. This makes it ideal for applications requiring high-density materials.

High Strength: It boasts a high tensile strength of 700–1000 MPa, enabling it to withstand significant mechanical stress.

Excellent Machinability: Despite its high hardness, it can still be processed using conventional machining methods such as turning, milling, drilling, and grinding, allowing for easy fabrication into various shapes and sizes.

Superior Radiation Shielding: At the same thickness, its radiation shielding capability is 1.7 times that of lead, effectively absorbing X-rays and gamma rays while being more environmentally friendly than lead.

Low Thermal Expansion Coefficient: Its thermal expansion coefficient (4–6×10⁻⁶/°C) is only half to one-third that of iron or steel, ensuring excellent dimensional stability under temperature variations.

Magnetic Properties: Unlike tungsten-nickel-copper alloys, tungsten-nickel-iron alloys exhibit certain ferromagnetic properties, giving them an advantage in specific applications.

Applications of High Density Tungsten Heavy Alloy Plate

Aerospace Industry: Used in balance weights for aircraft, helicopters, and satellites, such as wing balance weights for planes and rotor balance weights for helicopters, enhancing flight stability and control.

Military Industry: Serves as counterweights or protective components in weaponry and ammunition, such as penetrator cores in armor-piercing projectiles, leveraging its high density and strength to improve penetration capability.

Medical Field: Applied in medical equipment like CT scanner shielding, radiotherapy collimators, and protective components to safeguard patients and medical staff from radiation exposure.

Nuclear Industry: Used in nuclear reactor components and fuel containers due to its high density, excellent mechanical properties, and superior radiation shielding performance.

Mechanical Manufacturing: Employed in counterweights for mechanical hammers, flywheels, etc., improving operational efficiency and stability of machinery.

What is the composition of tungsten heavy alloy (WNIFE) plates?

Typically composed of 85-99% tungsten, with the remaining balance being nickel (Ni) and iron (Fe). Some variations may include small amounts of other alloying elements.

How does tungsten heavy alloy compare to lead for radiation shielding?

It provides better shielding at the same thickness (1.7× more effective than lead) while being non-toxic and more durable.

Can tungsten heavy alloy be machined easily?

Yes, despite its hardness, it can be machined (turned, milled, drilled, ground) into precise shapes, unlike pure tungsten, which is extremely hard and brittle.

Is tungsten heavy alloy magnetic?

Yes, tungsten-nickel-iron (WNiFe) alloys are slightly ferromagnetic, unlike tungsten-nickel-copper (WNiCu) alloys, which are non-magnetic.

Why choose tungsten heavy alloy over lead or steel for balancing applications?

Higher density allows for smaller, more compact weights with the same mass, saving space while improving performance.

Does tungsten heavy alloy corrode or oxidize?

It has good corrosion resistance, but surface treatments or coatings can further enhance durability in harsh environments.

What are the temperature limits for tungsten heavy alloy?

Maintains strength and stability at high temperatures, but performance depends on the exact alloy composition.
